In The Light was originally formed in June of 1999 to bring different religions, spiritual groups and individuals together to meet, dialogue and discuss how to be of better service to our communities.
By December of 1999 over forty spiritual organizations joined us in forums to discuss the many ideas and concerns that we shared in order to improve understanding between members of different faiths and our community. Such encounter and dialog has generated collaborative projects amongst diverse individuals and groups.
In The Light was incorporated in July of 2000 as a registered non-profit organization. During 2001 and 2002 we continued to hold forums which resulted in the foundation upon which In The Light began to increase the scope of its activity.
In 2002 In The Light also developed a relationship with the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions (CPWR) and participated in CPWR's first annual Goldin Institute for International Partnership and Peace. Through the Goldin Institute, CPWR is working to establish an international Partner City Network. In The Light is steadily building the capacity to most effectively collaborate with other local, national and international organizations to powerfully address the major issues facing our world today.
In May of 2003, In The Light launched, "Gandhi and Khan: Power of Nonviolence", to raise awareness of the transformational power of nonviolence as demonstrated by Mahatma Gandhi and Badshah Khan, a devout Muslim, who raised history's first nonviolent army. To date, two "Gandhi and Khan" events have been held as fund raisers in which 100% of donations have been distributed to refugees or women and children who have suffered the consequences of war and oppression. "Gandhi and Khan: Power of Nonviolence" has also been presented at a Ford Interfaith Network event, at the 2004 World Sabbath of Religious Reconciliation, the 2004 Interfaith World Peace Festival and The Institute for Applied Spiritual Technology's 2004 Candlelight Vigil of Peace.
In 2003 and 2004, In The Light hosted Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne, Founder/President of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement, of Sri Lanka, the world's largest spiritually-based peoples development movement. Funds were raised for nonprofit grassroots community building at an event on July 11, 2003 at First Unitarian Universalist Church in Detroit with over 300 people in attendance. On May 28, 2004 funds were raised for Kids4AfghanKids with Dr. Ariyaratne powerfully presenting at an event entitled, "A Better World is Happening".
We continue to expand the number of local and international organizations we collaborate with. In The Light is helping in the planning of a major nonviolence conference to be held in Metro Detroit in 2005. In the future other community building initiatives, currently in the planning stages, will be launched.
